Hangzhou, abbreviated as Hangzhou, is a prefecture level city, provincial capital, sub provincial city and megacity in Zhejiang Province of the People's Republic of China, a central city in the south wing of the Yangtze River Delta, a political, economic, cultural, scientific and educational, information and financial center and transportation hub in Zhejiang Province, an important e-commerce center in China, an internationally famous tourist city, a core city in the Dawan District of Hangzhou, and a central city in the G60 science and innovation corridor. Hangzhou is located in the southeast coast of China, the north of Zhejiang Province, the lower reaches of the Qiantang River, and the southern end of the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is the 11th largest city in China, the second largest city in the Yangtze River Delta and even East China, second only to Shanghai.
Hangzhou has a long history. Since the Neolithic period, there have been human activities. The earliest can be traced back to the Kuahu bridge site in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, 8,000 years ago. The Liangzhu site in Yuhang, Hangzhou, which has an early urban form, provides important evidence for the 5,000 year history of Chinese civilization. Since the establishment of the county government in the Qin Dynasty, Hangzhou has a history of more than 2,200 years of administrative system. It has become the capital of the Wu and Yue States and the Southern Song Dynasty, and is one of the seven ancient capitals of China. Hangzhou is one of the first batch of famous historical and cultural cities, with rich cultural landscapes in its jurisdiction. Among them, the cultural landscape of the West Lake in Hangzhou is a world cultural heritage. Since the 9th century, it has nurtured a number of literati poetry and folklore, which have deeply influenced the garden design of China, Japan and South Korea.
Hangzhou has been praised as a "paradise on earth" for a long time because of its beautiful scenery, wealth and livability since ancient times. Fan Chengda, the Southern Song Dynasty literati wrote the proverb "heaven above, Suzhou and Hangzhou below" recorded in the his book Wu County Chronicles. The Travels of Marco Polo, describing the Yuan Dynasty, praised Hangzhou as "the most luxurious Heavenly City in the world.”As a national key scenic tourist city, Hangzhou has famous scenic spots such as the West Lake, Xixi Wetland and Xianghu Lake, among which Wenlan Pavilion, Xiling Seal Art Society and many other scenic spots and historic sites are around the West Lake, and Qiandao Lake, Tianmu Mountain and other scenic spots are in the suburbs. Hangzhou has hosted the G20 summit in 2016 and FINA Short Course World Championships in 2018, and will host the Asian Games in 2023.
At present, it ranks eighth in Chinese Mainland in terms of economic aggregate and has been rated as the best commercial city in Chinese Mainland by Forbes for many times. As the headquarters of Alibaba, Ant Financial, NetEase and other large enterprises in the Internet industry, Hangzhou has a strong population attraction to people in the Internet industry, and is truly the "city of the Internet". In addition to the well-known Alibaba and Netease, Hangzhou has also bred a number of leading enterprises active in various branches of the Internet, covering e-commerce, finance, medical care, Internet of things and other fields. They are also growing into "unicorn" and "quasi unicorn" enterprises, changing the city and the Internet Ecology.
